About Us

When Ray O. Cook Co. was founded in 1947, central heating systems were starting to become popular and central air conditioning was a luxury only few could afford.

Harry S. Truman was president and World War II had just ended a few years prior. As time went on, our country celebrated post war times and central heating coupled with central air conditioning became more popular. As popularity grew along with heating and cooling technology, Ray O. Cook grew with the industry as well.

For over 60 years, generations of families within the Greater Sacramento and surrounding areas have relied on the Ray O. Cook name for all their heating and cooling needs. In fact, Ray O Cook's continued success is attributed to their loyal customers who for many generations have put their trust in them. Maintaining honesty, integrity, and superior satisfaction is second nature at Ray O. Cook.

Today, just as in 1947, Ray O. Cook continues to lead the industry in knowledge, training and certification of all its employees. Leading edge technology, quality and proven reliability are the key ingredients to any product Ray O. Cook will recommend to you.

Ray O. Cook proudly holds certifications as a Trane Comfort Specialist, North American Technician Excellence (N.A.T.E.), National Comfort Institute (N.C.I.), and the Better Business Bureau.

Ray O. Cook

Mr. Cook began Ray O. Cook Mechanical Contractors in 1947 out of his garage. Relying on his work ethic, the company branched out from working on homes to large commercial jobs throughout the area.

His company worked on the Sacramento Convention Center, county administration offices, Mercy General Hospital, several state office buildings and even a warehouse in Sparks, Nev.

"He was always fond (of saying) that if you're going to do the job, do it right and treat the customer right," said his son Larry Cook, who worked with his father.

Mr. Cook, who held 14 state subcontracting licenses, rode the ebb and flow of the business and at its peak, employed more than 100 people. His wife worked as office manager and his brother, Bob Cook, worked as a plumber and estimator.

"He would do 12-hour days, six days a week and loved every minute of it," his daughter said.

When he retired and sold the business in 1998, Mr. Cook told The Bee, "l thought maybe I could take a few days off a week.

That's not bad, is it? I'm 80 years old."

Raymond Oscar Cook was the fourth of six children born to Oscar and Mattie Cook in Selma, south of Fresno. His parents grew grapes for raisins.

He moved to Sacramento in 1938 to become a plumber’s apprentice. He worked for a small plumbing company for six years before starting his own business.

He married the former Marie Pappa in 1941, and they had two children. He was drafted into the Army at the end of World War II and served as a plumber at Ford Ord.

After selling the contracting business, he earned his real estate license and sold commercial real estate. He stopped working when his wife's health began to decline.

Mr. Cook was a pilot and owned single- and twin-engine Cessnas over the years. He would fly to job sites and take his wife on trips to Mexico. He also was a member of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Air Squadron.

Mr. Cook was a member of Rotary Club of Sacramento, Sacramento Plumbing Association and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, among others.

"He was really easygoing. He never got excited about anything. Whenever he was confronted with a problem, he just worked through it," his son said.
