Member Comments: Highly recommended! I originally found Ray O. Cook on Angie's List. I purchased their Angie's Big Deal for $89 for a furnace maintenance. We were in the process of buying a home in Rocklin via the short sale route, so we were never sure when/if we were going to actually buy the house. In the end we did, but got very busy and never scheduled this service...but Beth or Lynn at Ray O. Cook called every couple of days to try and schedule service. We finally did. Jeremy, their technician, inspected our furnace and discovered it was recalled about 15 years ago and the previous owner didn't do anything about it...or never knew about it. He took pictures of all the problem areas (like two 5" cracks in the heat exchange) and carbolic acid build up (the entire HVAC system is/was 23 years old). He had to shut off the gas to the furnace (which was in the attic). I was bummed because that wasn't the only thing wrong in the house. We knew the system was that old and knew replacing it was coming, but was hoping for another season before having to spend more money.
The following day, we had Paul, their sales person, come out and discuss a potential new HVAC system. Paul was super knowledgeable, nice, and NOT pushy...and not just a "sales person." The man knew what he was talking about. He tested the air flow in our house and spent almost two hours answering our questions and going over options. Paul said that the existing ductwork was still in good condition, but the airflow was not enough...so they will need to increase the air intake area in the ceiling (it looks great now, too). I felt he was very honest with us and didn't just talk about "bells & whistles," but what would actually be an efficient system for our specific home and for our price range. He also goes over all the SEER ratings..what they mean and what it means cost wise for each of the systems. We decided that night and took advantage of their 4 year same as cash promotion they had going on.
Paul had come out on a Friday and we had the installation on Tuesday. Doug and Ryan arrived at 7:31am (impressed because their ETA was 7:30-8:00am). They were also very knowledgeable, clean, and always wore shoe covers. They started with covering all of our carpet to our attic, too. They spent all day working and only took like a 25 min. lunch. They even do all sorts of testing to make sure everything is running right (which according to another HVAC installer we know not in the area, a lot of companies don't do this). Since they do this testing, they discovered an issue with the line which they took care of. They also fixed some of the existing duct work that had separated before we bought the house. ---Also with this testing, temperature affects it, so they sent out a technician the following day to see if he could get the readings accurately for the AC unit. Since, again, it's January, and the temps are still too cold, they have me scheduled for the spring to come back and do further testing. Erik, the next day technician was just as thorough as the others at the house.---But back to the installation day: They cleaned everything up. Taught us how to use our ultra fancy thermostat. Filled out our PG&E paperwork. We didn't need to do anything else. I also spoke with the independent Title 24 inspector and he even said this was one of the best companies he has worked with...that they always seem to do the work right the first time.
I was so worried about spending so much money on a system and wanted to be sure we chose the right company that would do the install correctly, be honest, and not completely kill me with the price for an efficient system.. I am without a doubt 100% sure we chose the right company. Very honest. No upselling. No high pressure. Give them a try!

We chose Ray O Cook over the other competitive estimate primarily because they are a local company and other factors being equal, we generally like to work with local vendors. The company was responsive in providing estimates, explaining available energy efficiency rebates and tax credit, scheduling work and following up on our questions and concerns. Their installation crew was pleasant and worked efficiently. The company handled the paperwork for the available rebates. We would be comfortable recommending this company to others considering similar work.
